Laser Resurfacing (Non-ablative) Cosmetic Dermatology Treatments

Overview

This nonsurgical procedure is used to target layers of skin below the surface. Non-ablative lasers can be used to remove tattoos, age spots, lesions, wrinkles, scars, burst blood vessels, loose skin, stretch marks and unwanted hair.

Preparation

Before the treatment, the skin is cleansed and sterilized. Anesthesia or sedation may be administered, depending on the type and extent of treatment.

Treatment

The physician shines a handheld laser on the skin at the treatment area. The laser passes through the outer layer and causes a controlled injury below the skin's surface, which causes the collagen within the skin to rebuild.

End of Procedure and Aftercare

When the non-ablative laser procedure is complete, the physician may apply a topical medication or ointment. The skin may be tender for the next few days. Because this treatment does not vaporize the skin's outer layer, the healing process is much faster than the ablative technique. Multiple treatments may be required to achieve the desired result.
