Chemical Peels Cosmetic Dermatology Treatments

A Chemical peel is most commonly performed for cosmetic reasons, to enhance appearance and self confidence. Chemical peel therapy may be performed in conjunction with other treatments. However a chemical peel is not a substitute for a face lift and does not prevent or slow the ageing process. Our medical practitioners will advise you on the correct peel for your skin type and problem following a free skin assessment. Chemical peeling uses a chemical solution in order to improve the skin's appearance providing a fresher, younger and rejuvenated appearance. It can reduce or eliminate fine lines under the eyes and around the mouth, correct uneven skin pigmentation, treat acne and soften the appearance of scars caused by acne. The procedure can also reduce the appearance of wrinkles caused by sun damage as well as skin blemishes common with age and hereditary conditions.

The treatment is ideal for:

- Age and liver spots
- Reduction of smooth fine surface wrinkles
- Reduction of superficial blemishes
- Correction of pigmentation problems
- Reduction of acne/acne scarring

CHEMICAL PEEL: LIGHT (AHA PEEL)

Overview

This outpatient procedure uses a mild acidic solution to remove the outermost layers of skin cells, which allows the skin to rejuvenate. Light chemical peels are commonly used to treat acne, fine wrinkles, and pigmentation problems.

Preparation

Before the peel, the facial skin is cleansed and sterilized. Light peels may be performed without any anesthesia, and can be used on the entire face or on selected portions of the face.

The Procedure

The physician applies the chemical solution to the desired areas of the face. The chemical solution is usually left on the skin for less than an hour and is then washed away with water. A soothing lotion may be applied.

Recovery

After a light peel, the skin must be protected from sunlight for a few days, but the patient can return to normal activities without a recovery period. The treated skin will flake off over the next week as the face heals, exposing the fresh new skin. More than one treatment may be required to achieve the desired result.

CHEMICAL PEEL: MEDIUM (TCA PEEL)

Overview

This outpatient procedure uses an acidic solution to remove the outermost layers of skin cells, which allows the skin to rejuvenate. Medium peels are commonly used to treat acne scars, fine wrinkles, blemishes, and pigmentation problems, and often work well for patients with darker complexions.

Preparation

Before the peel, the facial skin is cleansed and sterilized. Medium peels may be performed while the patient is lightly sedated, and can be used on the entire face or on selected portions of the face.

The Procedure

The physician applies the chemical solution to the desired areas of the face. The chemical solution is usually left on the skin for less than an hour and is then washed away with water. A soothing ointment may be applied.

Recovery

After a medium peel, the skin may be red and swollen for about a week. The outer layer of skin will then flake off, exposing the fresh new skin. The entire healing period takes about two weeks. More than one treatment may be required to achieve the desired result.
