Port Wine Stain (Naevus Flammeus) Cosmetic Dermatology Conditions

Overview

This condition is a vascular malformation that creates a discoloration on the skin. This type of birthmark most commonly appears on the face, but port-wine stains can be present anywhere on the body. In many cases they grow and become progressively darker and more noticeable with age.

Causes

Port-wine stains are caused by abnormal growth and swelling of the capillaries near the surface of the skin. The underlying reason for the swelling of the capillaries is unknown.

Diagnosis and Associated Problems

Port-wine stains can usually be identified by an examination of the skin. They can range in color from pink to reddish-purple, and they are typically more leathery than normal skin. In some cases, port-wine stains can be an indication of more serious vascular problems or syndromes. Port-wine stains that are noticeable, particularly on the face, can cause social problems for the patient.

Treatment

Treatment options may include laser therapy, cryotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery to remove the tissue, and tattooing to make the birthmark less noticeable.
